Sharon S. Tisher references the the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ,Rachel Carson and the Food Quality Protection Act 1996 in order to construct a short informative quiz about pesticides and the how they effect the average U.S. consumer.
Audience and Agenda:
This quiz was published by the Main Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association’s (MOFGA) website which was founded in 1971 by Abbie McMillen and Mort Mather. The MOFGA began as a certification program in order to inform and recruit local farmers to organic farming. They incur funding through their seminars, newsletters and certification programs. They currently have 5,000 members and certify 15% of Main’s diaries and 4% of their farms. The goals of the orginization are simple; To promote and assist in organic farming, and to “ illuminate for consumers the connection between healthful food and environmentally sound growing practices.” (MOFGA, About Page, 2009). The MOFGA publishes an informative quarterly newsletter called The Main Organic Farmer and Gardener that reaches 40,000 readers every year. The newsletter covers an array of issues, ranging from the socio-economic consequences of industrial agriculture to recipe tips and advice. Main Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association’s website gets 9.9 thousand hits a month.
Usefulness:
This source was useful because the information in the quiz was credible and emphasized crucial issues about pesticides and how they effect the average consumer. This quiz was very “user friendly” compared to similar online questionnaires and quizzes: it had links next to the questions so users could quickly get feedback. Tisher’s quiz is also helpful because it is multi dimensional; It has information about current legislation, relevant literature and tips for steering clear of dangerous pesticides. This quiz deals with many of the same agricultural issues as another one of my multi-media sources: The Meatrix.
